You can begin with a question, not a plan

A first conversation is a chance to meet, explain a little about what brings you here, and find out how a coach works. You are also deciding whether this feels like a relationship you want to explore.

You do not have to tell your whole story or commit to ongoing coaching in that first meeting. Check the individual coach’s booking page for its length, price and purpose.

A little preparation can help

You might ask yourself: What has been on my mind? What would I like to understand differently? What would make this conversation useful?

A few notes are enough. You can also arrive unsure and say so. If you have accessibility needs, preferences about the format, or questions about cost, raise them before booking.

Make room for your questions too

Ask how the coach approaches conversations, what experience they bring to your area of interest, and how you will decide what to work on.

Discuss confidentiality and its limits, fees, cancellation arrangements and what happens between sessions. Different coaches work differently; an introductory conversation helps make those differences clear.

Notice how the conversation felt

Did you feel listened to? Could you ask questions or disagree? Was the approach understandable? Can you imagine speaking honestly with this person?

You can take time to decide, speak with another coach, or choose not to continue. There is no obligation to make the first person you meet your coach.
